“By using the product, they were so excited and they learned so much...”–K-5 Librarian and Instructinal Technology Teacher
Starting a unit or lesson with the key vocabulary that students will see in their readings or presentations aids in overall comprehension and retention. In this activity, students will create a storyboard that defines and illustrates key vocabulary from A Single Shard. This can be done at the beginning of each chapter so that students can preview what they will read or teachers could decide to do at the end of a chapter as an assessment. When students define and illustrate each term, they master the application of it and retain it as part of their lexicon.

Engage students by turning vocabulary practice into fun, interactive games. This helps cement understanding and makes review sessions memorable for everyone.
Write vocabulary words and definitions on separate cards. Mix them up and place them at one end of the classroom. Students will race to match words with their correct definitions.
Form groups of 3–4 students to encourage collaboration. Teams can strategize together, boosting both engagement and peer learning.
Demonstrate how the relay works before starting. Show students how to pick a card, run to their team, and work together to find matches. Clear modeling ensures everyone understands the expectations.
Congratulate all teams for their participation. Review any tricky words as a class, reinforcing correct meanings and addressing misconceptions in a supportive way.
Visual vocabulary boards, like the storyboard activity described, help 4th–6th graders learn key terms by combining definitions and illustrations. This method supports comprehension and retention by letting students define, illustrate, and apply each word in context.
To create a storyboard, students should choose key vocabulary terms, write definitions in the description boxes, and make illustrations that represent each word. This activity can be started at the beginning or end of a chapter as a preview or assessment.
Introducing vocabulary beforehand helps students better understand and remember what they read. Previewing key terms allows students to recognize them in context, making the story more accessible and improving overall comprehension.
Useful vocabulary from A Single Shard includes: apprentice, arduous, bestow, brazen, connoisseur, dignity, kiln, intricate, shard, subtle, and virtue. These words can be used for definitions and illustration activities.
Teachers can assign students to define and illustrate key terms from the chapter, either individually or as a group. Reviewing these visual boards helps assess understanding and provides an opportunity for feedback or clarification.
